During this live virtual event, alumni leaders with careers in the sports industry will share how their field has changed this past year, what professionals must do to stay relevant or get jobs in this space, and share advice on how to excel in one’s career.

Panelists include John Mount ’91, vice president of sports & entertainment marketing at The Coca-Cola Company; Meredith Rieder ’02, associate director of sports information at Duke University; and Larry Farmer ’12, assistant coach of men’s basketball at MIT. Ali Teopas Spungen ’08, associate director of the NCAA’s Division III , will serve as moderator.

After the panel discussion, attendees will have the opportunity to network and learn from one another in breakout rooms.

About the Panelists and Moderator

John Mount ’91

John serves as Vice President of Sports & Entertainment Marketing at the Coca-Cola Company. His team is responsible for partnering with the company’s national sports assets and ensuring they enable Coca-Cola to be “better, special and different” with its customers and consumers. His team is also responsible for activating in market all of Coca-Cola’s professional teams, as well as, top colleges and universities.

John formerly led Coca-Cola’s National Retail Sales Customer Marketing team in Atlanta from 2014 – 2017, as well as, the company’s Retail Strategy and Marketing team from 2011 – 2014. Prior to arriving in Atlanta, he led Coca-Cola’s Kroger Total Beverage Team in Cincinnati from 2007-2010. He has also held various positions of increasing responsibility within Region Sales & Marketing and Category Management. John has been with The Coca-Cola Company for 22 years.

Prior to Coke he led several customer teams at RJR Nabisco along with sales management positions. He earned his MBA from the University of Notre Dame. He graduated from Denison in 1991 and played varsity football and baseball.

Meredith Rieder ‘02

Meredith Rieder joined the Duke staff in August of 2008 and serves as an Associate Director of Sports Information. Prior to being elevated to her current position in July of 2015, she spent seven years as an Assistant Director of Sports Information.

Rieder’s primary responsibilities include handling media relations for the men’s soccer, wrestling and men’s lacrosse programs.

Rieder came to Duke after serving as an Athletic Communications Assistant at Colgate University for three years. A native of Columbus, Ohio, she handled the day-to-day media relations duties for the volleyball, women’s basketball, men’s lacrosse and men and women’s track and cross country teams at Colgate.

She also served as the Assistant Director of Athletic Communications for three years at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, N.Y.

A four-year member of the women’s soccer team at Denison, Rieder was a four-time all-region selection, earned All-America honors as a senior and helped guide the Big Red to four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. In 2015, she was inducted into Denison’s Athletic Hall of Fame. Rieder graduated cum laude from Denison University in 2002 with a degree in communication and French.

Rieder is a current member of the CoSIDA Academic All-America committee.

Larry Farmer ’12

Larry Farmer enters his fourth season as a member of the MIT men’s basketball coaching staff in 2020-21. Prior to joining the Engineers, Farmer was a graduate assistant with the Boston College men’s basketball team from 2015-17.

Farmer earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry from Denison University in 2012 and received his MBA from Boston College’s Carroll Graduate School of Management in 2017. He currently works as an internal consultant for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts.

As a student athlete at Denison, Farmer was a three-year starter and team captain garnering two NCAC All-League honors. Farmer finished his career as member of the 1,000 point club as he is ranked 15th in school history in scoring, first in games played and second in steals.

Ali Teopas Spungen ’08

Ali serves as associate director of the NCAA’s Division III. She has been with the NCAA since July 2013, working with both the Championships & Alliances and Leadership Development Departments before making the move to Division III in July 2019. She is responsible for oversight and coordination of the Division III Conference Grant Program, as well as primary liaison to the national Division III Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). She oversees the “Gameday the DIII Way” sportsmanship and game environment initiative and is the primary liaison to the convention planning committee, as well as secondary liaison to select governance committees, including Presidents, Management Councils, and Strategic Planning and Finance Committee, among other assignments.

Ali has a bachelor of arts degree in sports management and communication from Denison, where she was a student-athlete on the softball team and president of both the Denison SAAC and the North Coast Athletic Conference SAAC. Additionally, Spungen holds a master’s degree in educational leadership from the University of Dayton.
