Philosophy Coffee: “Whose History? Which Monuments?”
George Santayana famously wrote that “those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” Statues, monuments, and memorials are often intended to help us in this project of remembering. Yet they are often also sites of conflict. Whose history, or what aspects of history, ought we memorialize? Most monuments seem to be celebratory, while Santayana implies that what we need to remember are our own mistakes. What is the moral, political, or even aesthetic work being done in a monument? What purposes do monuments serve? Can monuments only mean what their creators or installers intended them to mean, or they can be reinterpreted? Finally, might there be aspects of history that are best forgotten? All are welcome.
