James “Jim” Sutherin was originally a member of the class of 1946, but left Denison to serve with the Navy from 1942 to 1946. He received a number of medals and citations, including the American Theatre Ribbon, before his discharge. After he returned to campus, he earned a place on the Dean’s List of Annual Honors as a member of the class of 1949.

Jim has been an extremely loyal alumnus and an enthusiastic volunteer on behalf of the college. He has worked as Ford Campaign co-section leader for Cleveland, president of the Cleveland Alumni Association, Greater Denison Campaign Leader for Cleveland, Denison Development Campaign Division Leader for Cleveland, Denison Development Campaign Division Leader, councilor-at-large, vice chairman and chairman of the Annual Fund.

He has also been an active community leader serving in such capacities as president of the Rotary Club of Bedford, chairman of the board of trustees for the First Baptist Church of Cleveland, trustee of the Ohio Baptist Education Association, and member of the Insurance Board of Cleveland.

Working most of his career as a member of a highly successful family insurance company, Jim has earned the reputation of being a man of high intelligence and force, and effective e leader with the ability to get things done.

Jim’s wife, Dona class of 1952, is a previous Citation winner. One of their children is a Denison alumna, class of 1978.
