The highest honor obtainable for Presbyterian women was bestowed upon Mary Hazlett Buchanan in 1950 when she was named president of the National Council of Presbyterian Women. Nationally known as the head of half a million women, she travels throughout the United States, and recently completed a tour of South American countries in the interest of her office, where she serves a four-year term.
Mrs. Buchanan’s many church-centered activities include serving as president of the local Presbyterial Society, first vice president of Ohio Synod, and deaconess and elder of the local church. She is also notable for her committee work with the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of the U.S.A. During her career she has been president of the local College Club, Civic Club, Junior Red Cross, and Council of Church Women. She entered public service as an Ohio State PTA officer.
She has communicated religious and service ideals to her four children; Calvin, who graduated from Western Seminary and is now studying in Edinburgh, Scotland; Mary, who received her master’s degree at Western Reserve and is now with Children’s Service in Cleveland; Winifred, who is studying for her master’s degree in religious education at McCormick Seminary in Chicago; and Bill, who is a cadet in the Navy Air Corps. Mr. Buchanan is a distributor of Atlantic products.
