One of a handful of insurance men to reach the 50-year mark as an underwriter in Dayton, Henry Stout has to his credit a long line of business, civic, and alumni accomplishments. A John Hancock Mutual Life Agent, he has served as chairman of the National Association of Life Underwriters’ Committee on Industry Development and Information, as president of the Dayton Association of Life Underwriters, the Dayton Association of General Agents and Managers, Ohio Association of Life Underwriters, John Hancock General Agents Association, and as trustee of the National Association of Life Underwriters.
As mayor of Dayton from 1954 to 1958, Mr. Stout focused on educating the public to the uses of taxation and its relation to effective and honest government. Other civic appointments include his membership on the Dayton City Commission and the Dayton City Plan Board.
He has been an active alumnus of Denison throughout the years, and became a trustee emeritus in 1972 after serving on the board for 32 years. He was president of the Alumni Society from 1937 to 1939, served as a leadership gifts chairman for various Denison fund campaigns and was otherwise active in student recruitment, the local alumni club, his class reunions, and annual support.
His loyalties to Denison, to his state life underwriters association, the First Baptist Church of Dayton, which his great-great grandfather helped to organize, and to the City of Dayton are some of the most distinctive features that characterize him.
