Doug is Professor of Philosophy and Law at Rutgers University, where he has taught since 1977. He has twice served as acting Chair of the Philosophy Department at Rutgers, which is ranked in the top ten philosophy departments in the nation. At Rutgers Douglas was instrumental in establishing the Jurisprudence Program, a five-year combined program leading to a J.D. in law and Ph.D. in Philosophy. This year, he was made a member of the Faculty of Law, with a joint appointment in Philosophy.
A Phi Beta Kappa and summa cum laude graduate of Denison, Douglas received both his Ph.D. and J.D. in 1976 from the Ohio State University. In 1980, he was named the recipient of the Parents’ Association Outstanding Teacher Award for Rutgers College.
Douglas’s research focuses on problems at the intersection of law and philosophy. He is the author of two books: Drugs and Rights (Cambridge University Press) and Philosophy of Criminal Law (Rowman & Littlefield). He has published over fifty articles and reviews in scholarly journals, and serves as Associate Editor of Criminal Justice Ethics.
In 1978 and 1988 Douglas returned to the Denison campus as an Alumni Scholar. He makes his home in New Brunswick with Linda Langschied.
