Dr. Charles P. Henry, class of 1969, is an associate professor of Afro-American studies at the University of California, Berkeley. Following his graduation from Denison he received his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. He began his teaching career at Howard University, and in 1976, returned to Denison and assistant professor of political studies and director of the black studies center.
In addition to his teaching and scholarship, Charles is board chairman of the 140,000-member Amnesty International, which works to obtain more humane treatment for non-violent political prisoners.
As a Denison undergraduate, he supplied leadership in the initial development of the black student community. He was chairman of the Afro-American Steering Committee which initiated several approaches to enriching the black studies program, and improving the black student experience: among them, the first Experimental College in the development of black studies at Denison. He was also a member of the Upward Bound Committee that resulted in the inauguration of the Pilot Enrichment Program for disadvantaged secondary school students in Licking County, and served three years on the Race Relations Committee of the Denison Campus Association. He was a member of the dean’s list in his junior and senior years and an intramural football player.
As an alumnus, Chuck served as a member-at-large of the Alumni Board for three years (1978-1981).
