John Hammock graduated from Denison in 1966 and went on to receive his M.A. in 1968 and his Ph.D in 1971 from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University.
John has lectured and written extensively on international relations, social research, and a variety of development issues. He has served as a visiting professor of political science at the University of Costa Rica, and visiting professor of social science at the Universidad del Valle, Cali, Colombia. He has also taught courses in international relations and community change in the third world at Tufts University and worked as a consultant with several organizations involved in development work in the Dominican Republic.
In 1984, he became executive director of Oxfam America, a private, nonprofit international agency that funds self-help development in poor nations in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean.
A former professor who supervised his honors project at Denison, writes of John, “He was restless, provocative, challenging, demanding, and a hard worker. He had a quick and penetrating intellect. Even then he was deeply committed to the causes of peaceful change and of economic, political and social development….. John was an activist before the campus truly became active. He was, as well, a serious student, with a tough analytical mind, and a moral commitment to a just world.”
