Dick was named the Beatrice Kuhn Professor of Law at Northwestern University in 1987.
Professor Speidel holds an L.L.M. degree from Northwestern University and a J.D. degree from the University of Cincinnati, where he was editor-in-chief of the Cincinnati Law Review. In 1984, he received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Cincinnati College Of Law.
Between 1961 and 1977, Professor Speidel was a member of the law faculty at the University of Virginia and Grace N. and Henry L. Doherty Professor of Law from 1970 to 1977. He has been a senior Fulbright lecturer and guest professor at the University of Vienna, visiting professor at the law schools of the University of California at Berkeley and the University of Washington, and visiting scholar at Harvard Law School and Loyola Law School (Los Angeles). In 1991 he was the Fujiyama Distinguished Visiting Professor at the University of Hawaii School of Law. In 1982, Professor Speidel received the Robert Childres Memorial Award for Teaching Excellence at Northwestern University School of Law.
Dick’s co-authored publications include, most recently, Studies in Contract Law (4th Ed. 1991) and Commercial Transactions (5th Ed. 1993). He is the co-author of a five-volume treatise on Federal Arbitration Law published in January 1994.
Dick served as a Denison trustee from 1972 until 1991, when he was made a life trustee. He has been a volunteer for the Annual Fund and is currently working as a member of the Chicago Campaign Committee.
Dick and his wife Liz live in Chicago. One of his two children is a Denison alumnus.
