Dr. David O. Woodyard dedicated his life to the transformational power of faith, education, and community. He met his cherished wife Joanne ’55 while they were both students at Denison; the couple were fixtures in the Granville community and enjoyed 70 years of marriage before David’s passing on March 27, 2025.

A beloved Denisonian in every sense, David served the university for more than six decades as chaplain, pro- fessor, advisor, mentor, and friend. His career reflected a steadfast commitment to exploring the intersection of religion, society, and personal growth, guiding generations of students to consider how their beliefs could shape both their lives and the world around them.

After earning his Bachelor of Arts at Denison, David received a Master of Divinity from Union Theological Seminary, then began his ministry at the University of Connecticut. In 1960, he returned to Granville to serve as Denison’s chaplain, marking the beginning of a remarkable career that would leave an indelible mark on the campus community. He later earned his Doctor of Ministry from Vanderbilt Divinity School and served twice as Chair of the Faculty, in addition to participating on countless university committees.

As Professor of Religion, David was known for his compassion, wisdom, and ability to make theological and ethical concepts deeply relevant to students’ lives. His scholarship was prolific — he is the author of ten books — and his teaching was rooted in theology, human identity, and human rights. He helped students find their own voices and convictions during times of societal change.

In his later years, David collaborated with faculty across disciplines to explore the connections between religion, economics, and ecology, demonstrating his enduring commitment to a more just and sustainable world. He continued to teach and mentor students until just weeks before his death at the age of 92.

Beyond the classroom, David was deeply involved in Denison’s life — he served on the Reunion Gift Committee, supported student organizations, and established the Mr. & Mrs. W. C. Woodyard Memorial Scholarship in honor of his parents to support future generations of Denisonians.
