Journalism Department Fall Shoutouts and Awards

Congratulations to the following students, alums, and faculty members on their latest accomplishments!

  • Tyler Thompson ’27, Torria Catrone ’24, and Sarah Wuellner ’24 earned a first-place award for business reporting from the Society of Professional Journalists “Best of Ohio” contest.
  • Ella Diehl ’27, Sarah Sollinger ’26, and Ellie Owen ’25 earned a first-place award for education reporting from the Society of Professional Journalists “Best of Ohio” contest.
  • Sollinger and Annie Kennedy ’25 earned a first-place award for feature writing from the Society of Professional Journalists “Best of Ohio” contest.
  • Noah Fishman ’25 earned a first-place government reporting award from the Society of Professional Journalists “Best of Ohio” contest for his coverage of Newark’s controversial “camping ban.”
  • Alan Miller earned a “best of show” award from the Society of Professional Journalists “Best of Ohio” contest.
  • Managing editor Julia Lerner earned a first-place award for The Reporting Project’s weekly newsletter from the Society of Professional Journalists “Best of Ohio” contest.
  • Andrew Theophilus ’25 earned a second place “best of show” award, and was named among the best still photographers in the state by the Society of Professional Journalists “Best of Ohio” contest.
  • Theophilus and Daniela Gomez Vargas ’26, alongside Shuler and Miller earned a second-place award for medical, science and healthcare reporting for their coverage of environmental issues like water health and drought from the Society of Professional Journalists “Best of Ohio” contest.
  • Theophilus, Owen Baker ’25, and Anna Jones ’24 earned a second-place award for videography for their documentaries about an amateur drag-racing team, a local comedian and a Newark women’s hockey team.
  • Theophilus, Sollinger, and Emmet Anderson ’25 earned a second place award for their sports and recreation coverage, including stories about a local mountain-biking destination, a Superhero Baseball game, and March Madness.
  • Emma Baum ’26 earned a first-place award from the Cleveland Press Club’s “All Ohio Excellence in Journalism” contest for her reporting about gaps in the National Weather Service radar system that leave some parts of the country vulnerable to severe weather without warning.
  • Theophilus and Baker earned a second-place award from the Cleveland Press Club’s “All Ohio Excellence in Journalism” contest for their documentary “Rust and Rubber.”
  • Miller earned a third place award in the Cleveland Press Club’s “All Ohio Excellence in Journalism” contest for his stories about the renovation of the historic Licking County Courthouse.
  • Sarah Sollinger ’26 earned a third place award in the Cleveland Press Club’s “All Ohio Excellence in Journalism” contest for her coverage of a Newark middle school principal’s handling of complaints about bullying.
  • Noah Fishman ’25 earned a third-place award in the Cleveland Press Club’s “All Ohio Excellence in Journalism” contest for his coverage of the Newark camping ban.

  • Mia Fischel ’26 had her personal narrative “How to Hold a Heart” featured in Exile literary magazine.
