Doug has thoroughly enjoyed every facet of his career in finance, virtually all of it spent with William Blair, a global investment firm offering investment banking, asset management, equity research, institutional and private brokerage, and private capital to institutional, individual and issuing clients. Doug joined the company in 1988 in the private investor department. In 1996, after obtaining his M.B.A., he joined William Blair’s Investment Management division as a portfolio manager and member of the consumer products research team. At the current time, Doug manages customized equity and balanced portfolios for individuals, family groups and institutions.
Doug brings the same passion to his community activities outside the office. In 1996, he founded the Springboard Foundation, which targets communities at risk by supporting small not-for-profit organizations throughout the city. Springboard’s mission is to improve the quality of life in Chicago’s economically challenged neighborhoods by focusing on grass-roots efforts that may otherwise have difficulty obtaining financial assistance. Many programs promote constructive out-of-school activities for children.
Springboard made grants to three organizations in its first year. Today it has 50 active members and has received gifts from more than 60 outside donors who support its cause. Approximately $450,000 is raised per year that goes to support more than 25 well-run financially starved programs. Since inception, Springboard has awarded more than $3 million in grants to over 200 deserving educational programs.
Doug has a long history of Denison volunteer service. He has helped with fundraising on several reunion gift committees and as a President’s Associates volunteer. He served on the President’s Leadership Council, and hosted a Chicago event for Posse students and alumni leaders in 2009. His admiration for the Posse Program led him to create a Scholarship Fund and build an internship program with Posse students and William Blair. Doug has served on the Board of Directors for the Midwestern chapter of the US Committee for Unicef and currently serves on the Board of Trustees for North Shore Country Day School where two of his three children reside. Doug has been happily married to Annie Ravenscroft Mabie (class of ’87) for over 20 years.
