John D. Lowenberg Sr. is a principal of Anvil Management Company LLC, based in Wilmington, Delaware. Prior to the formation of Anvil Management, John had been with The Robinson-Humphrey Company, LLC — an Atlanta-based investment banking firm — since 1970. In 1997, he retired from his long-held position as managing director. He served on Long Range Planning, Capital Commitment, and Best Buys committees and was a director of several public and private companies.
Since graduation, John has been a loyal and active Denisonian. He joined the Board of Trustees in 1988, and was granted Life Trustee status in 2012. While an Active Trustee, he served on the Enrollment and Finance & Audit Committees and chaired the Investment Committee from January 1989 to June 2008. During his 19-year tenure, the value of the endowment increased from $66.5 million to $696 million after spending. John also served on the ad-hoc Sports Review Committee of the Board.
In addition to his service on the Board, John has been a Denison Alumni Recruiting Team (DART) Volunteer and has served as both a Career Advisor and Alumni Club President. He also has served on several Reunion committees, including his 50th Reunion committee in 2014. As a student at Denison, John majored in economics and was inducted into the Sigma Chi fraternity.
John helped lead the effort that resulted in the establishment of the Julian H. Robertson Jr. Endowed Professorship in 2008. The donors honored Julian H. Robertson Jr. as a leader in the investment world, instrumental in the growth and management of the college’s endowment.
In this spirit of investment leadership, John continues to actively support the efforts of the Investments Office, to help ensure the long-term growth and success of the endowment. Further, his unmatched enthusiasm and love of investing led John to mentor young people interested in investing. His huge positive impact as a mentor cannot be overstated. His steadfast faith, patience, incredible memory, and sharp intellect make John a tremendous investor, and an even more remarkable mentor.
John’s legacy extends generously out into his local community, including service to the Environmental Learning Center Foundation, the Riverside Theatre Distinguished Lecturer Series, and St. Edwards School, where he serves as trustee on the finance and investment committees. He serves on the external investment committee for Partners Capital Investment Group and on the advisory boards of Cathay Capital Holdings I, II; LP private equity fund investing in China; and DAG Management LLC I, II, III and IV (Series B Round Venture Capital); PTV Sciences II; and Bayhills Capital I, II.
He and his late wife, Rosemary, are the proud parents of John Jr. ’93 and Amy ’93.
