In June, Bruce Bailey will be recognized for his forty-year tenure at Banc One. Upon graduation from Denison, he was hired by City National Bank, a local Columbus bank, which is now Banc One Corporation, one of the ten largest financial institutions in the U.S. Most recently Bruce was President of Banc One West Virginia, and previously had been affiliate chief executive officer in Mansfield, Ravenna, and Akron as well as Vice Chairman of Banc One Indiana Corp.
Bruce continued his education at the Stonier Graduate School of Banking, Bank One College, and the management schools at Harvard and Columbia Universities. He was an instructor at Stonier and the American Institute of Banking where he trained other bankers.
In each community where he has lived, Bruce has been exceptionally active on civic boards for philanthropic, cultural, health, education, and youth organizations. He was elected community president of: The United Way; the Boy Scouts of America; the Chamber of Commerce; Rotary; Junior Achievement; Ohio State College of Business, Pacesetters; Old Trail School, a private school; The Akron City Club; and Delta Upsilon International Fraternity. Currently, Bruce serves on the Boards of the West Virginia Symphony, Cabel Huntington Hospital Foundation, Central District Boy Scouts, W.V. Educational Alliance, and the Delta Upsilon Educational Foundation. In recognition of his community service, he has received numerous awards, among them the Distinguished Service Award of the Jaycees, the A.Z. Baker Award for outstanding service to the Rotary, the Governor’s Executive Order of Ohio Commodores, and the William H. Spurgeon III Award of the Boy Scouts of America.
From 1980 to 1982, Bruce served as President of Denison’s Society of the Alumni. In this position, Bruce initiated a reorganization of the Alumni Council that incorporated major volunteer positions in admissions and fund-raising. He has also served in a number of additional volunteer capacities for Denison, including membership this year on his Class Fund Committee.
Bruce’s father, the late Rev. Raymond L. Bailey, was a member of Denison’s Class of 1930, and held the Honorary Doctorate of Divinity from Denison. The parents of three grown children, Bruce and his wife Sandy now make their home in Akron, Ohio. One of their daughters, Valerie Bailey Stutler, is a member of Denison’s Class of 1985.
