Citation awarded June, 1986
Following his graduation from Denison in 1936, Hermann Rhu Jr. enrolled at Case Western Reserve University for his medical training, receiving his M.D. in 1940. He is currently the senior chief of obstetrics and gynecology at the Thomas Davis Clinic in Tucson, Arizona, and a member of the faculty at the college of gynecology and obstetrics at the University of Arizona.
Long active in county and state professional organizations, Dr. Rhu has served as president of the Pima County Unit and the Arizona division of the American Cancer Society, member of the Tucson Planned Parenthood Society, and president of the Southwest Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. He was a founding fellow of the American College of Obstetricians (ACOG) and, after serving that organization in a number of different capacities, was elected the 31st president in 1980. The ACOG represents more than 22,000 obstetrician and gynecologists and is considered “the leading organization that speaks for the specialty.” Thus, his election to the presidency gives evidence of Dr. Rhu’s stature at the national level.
