Plastic Surgeon and Political Wonk

Powell, Ohio

Citation awarded on Saturday, June 3, 2017

As a summa cum laude biology major at Denison, Anne’s next step to attend medical school was expected. The combination of medicine and politics that would shape the subsequent 30 years of her career may seem to be a more surprising combination, but for those who know her, not at all unforeseen. “Dr. T,” as everyone calls her, has long been passionate about improving the healthcare delivery system for all Americans, and she often finds herself operating at the intersection of medicine, politics, and health policy. She has served as president of the Columbus Medical Association and on numerous committees for the Ohio State Medical Association (OSMA) and the AMA.

After Denison, Anne completed her M.D. from Ohio State, where she would also earn a master’s in public health. She is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS ) and has served on its Board of Directors and as chair of both the Government Affairs Council and Political Action Committee. She completed her term as ASPS Board VP of advocacy & health policy, and she is slated to serve next as VP of aesthetics and private practice. In her home state, Anne serves on the OSMA Task Force on Legislation, monitoring the statehouse for bills that will impact Ohio physicians and testifying on their behalf when needed.

She is co-chair of admissions for the OSU College of Medicine, assembling the next cohort of Dr. Buckeyes. Anne has offered summer medical internships for Denison pre-med students for the past 25 years, and these students even live with Anne and her family, offering a real glimpse of the lifestyle of a surgeon-mother.

Anne’s parents, Connie ’58 and John ’57, began the Taylor family Denison tradition, followed by her four siblings, two of them fellow triplets. She has been married to David Heutel for 27 years, and they have four children. The oldest graduating from Denison in 2016; the second and third currently attending Denison; and the fourth is a high school senior. In her spare time, Anne can be found on the golf course working diligently on her short game, or training for her next marathon after finishing the Columbus Cap City in April.
