Henry Dove is a psychiatrist whose commitment to education in his field has resulted in significantly improved opportunities for minorities in psychiatry, and in major contributions to areas of psychiatry and public policy.

After graduating from Denison, Henry attended the University of Cincinnati for his M.D. and then completed a residency in psychiatry at Georgetown University. Following his training, he stayed on the Georgetown faculty. As a consequence of his strong interest in education in general and minority medical student education, development and recruitment specifically, he also began working with Howard University to establish a fully accredited training program in psychiatry, a goal that was achieved in three years’ time. While there he also served as the Director of the Psychiatric Consultation Service.

In 1995 henry became Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Medical Education in Psychiatry at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Beyond the development of that program through recruitment of outstanding medical students nationally and internationally, Henry has initiated significant outreach beyond the university. He chairs the University of Illinois Committee on Racial Bias and Diversity Management for the Cook County Circuit Court. He has overseen the development of evaluation instruments and the design of a model training program for judges and officers of the court in Cook County on issues of race, ethnicity, gender and sexual preference. The program will soon be a requirement of all incoming judges serving on the judiciary bench of Cook County. In addition, Henry has developed a statewide training program for staff of Illinois State mental hospitals in the area of assessment and treatment planning for the mentally ill. Using simulated patients in small group training sessions, he has successfully applied a train-the-trainer model to bring about significant improvements in the quality of care in these facilities.

Henry served Denison as an Alumni-Nominated Trustee from 1988 to 1994. He has also worked on behalf of his alma mater as a career advisor and as a fundraiser for the Annual Fund, his Class Reunion Fund, and The Campaign for Denison. Henry makes his home in Oak Park, Illinois. His niece, Valerie D. Dove, is a member of the Class of 1991
