Dr. Shirley Fitch Colthart displayed tremendous dedication in becoming an distinguished woman in geriatrics medicine, all while raising a family of five children.

Now working in the division of community mental health at the University of Rochester, she started as a psychiatrist in the study and treatment of emotional and psychiatric problems of elderly persons at the Geriatric Study Center in Toronto before such problems were receiving much attention. Working largely in the settings of community mental health centers in Chicago and currently in Rochester, she promoted the delivery of psychiatric services with a team approach to those usually unable to obtain the help they need.
