A Note Regarding COVID-19

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, our priority at Denison has been preserving the safety of our community while providing students with as normal a college experience as possible. With a strong interest in continuing to host events this fall, the University has introduced several COVID mitigation strategies. Vaccines continue to be our best defense against COVID-19, and in preventing serious illness and hospitalizations, and for this reason, we are requiring all visitors to campus to be fully vaccinated. We ask those alumni, family members, and friends who are unvaccinated to please not visit campus at this time. As an additional measure, we will require all guests and members of the Denison community to wear masks indoors at all times unless eating or drinking. Masks will not be required outdoors. All of us at Denison thank you for your support as we work to keep our community safe.

About Big Red Ice Hockey

Our Program. Denison Big Red ice hockey competes on a very high level. Extremely committed team members hail from across the United States and Canada, with most players coming from high-level varsity and prep school programs, including Tier 1 Elite U-18, Junior (USPHL and NA3HL), and AA U-18. Denison competes in the ACHA Div 2, and along with top Great Lakes teams, Denison’s schedule consistently includes colleges and universities from the East Coast.

Our Tradition. Since its founding in 1955, men’s ice hockey has been contributing to student life and the campus culture at Denison. Throughout the last 66 years, countless DU skaters have worn the Red and White with pride. Denison’s home ice has changed from time to time, and the team’s current home rink is in the Reese Ice Arena, which is nestled near the Welsh Hills between Granville and nearby Newark. In its hallowed history, the Big Red have pulled out some amazing upsets under a legacy of dedicated coaches, each of whom moved the program forward in significant ways.

Our Future. There is no question that Denison hockey is emerging as a prominent program in the Midwest. The players and coaches have earned that respect through their dedication and hard work on and off the ice. But much of the credit goes to faithful alumni, parents, and friends of the program, whose financial support has been moving Big Red hockey on an upward trajectory for decades. Since the mid-’50s, each generation of players has contributed to the success of the team, first as dedicated student-athletes, then as loyal donors. And now, the program is poised to take another leap forward. As a club program, hockey is funded in three ways:

  1. Through DCGA student organization budgeting
  2. By alumni, parents of current hockey players, and community boosters who support the program’s operating expenses with gifts to the Annual Fund
  3. Through income from the Denison Hockey Endowment, established in 2017 to support the hockey program.
